Most of the time we are busy, happily buzzing along, getting things done, doing our work, taking care of our families. But let’s face it – we don’t take enough time off.

“Time off! Are you out of your head? The Johnson project is due next week. One kid has a recital and the other one has to go to the doctor. And I still haven’t done my taxes….”

Ok, so you don’t have the time, or the money for that matter, for a month in Provence. How about an hour or two? An afternoon? A long lunch? Maybe go crazy and take a long weekend?

I know it when I feel it. Dread as I approach the office door. A sinking feeling in my stomach. I sit down at my desk and stare, not sure what I should do next.

When you feel like this, leave. Just go. Call your spouse and ask them to lunch. Or to go to a park somewhere (which should be quiet in the middle of the week) and take a long walk. Maybe play frisbee with the dog. Take a trip to the hobby shop and try your hand at watercolors.

My point is this: when burnout sets in you no longer have a choice. You are simply not going to get anything done of any consequence (Facebook posts don’t count) until you move past it. Face this fact and do something – anything.

It is the most productive thing you can do.
